Shipwreck of The Sea Splitter

The Water Watch came into existence more than a century ago when a ship (The Sea Splitter ) was attacked some 10 miles from the shore which is now home to the docks of the Fishing village known as Buckie. The crew didn't get a good look at the large shape in the sea which capsized the boat and threw them into the ocean.

Many crews would lost their entire number in this situation, drowning in their panic; however the Captain of the Sea Splitter was a man by the name of Angus Seastride. As his family name might suggest Angus came from a long line of sailors and the seemingly fearless captain was able to somehow calm his crew and with his leadership they swam to shore, clinging to debris as they whispered prayers for protection from whatever gods might be listening.

A remarkable amount of crew made it back to shore that night. Exact numbers are unknown but historians familiar with the type of ship speculate that as many as 120 crew may have been aboard, and the vast majority survived.

Never a man to let a grudge go, Angus vowed revenge on what ever foul sea creature had caused so many of his crew to suffer such an ill fate on the day of the attack. The crew became known as the Water Watch and it was their sworn duty to watch the sea for any sign of trouble.

Foundation of Settlement

After surveying the area he found a mine that was quite rich in iron and the settlement was formed, named for Angus' first mate who perished in the attack. The first and only thing constructed of any note in the early days was a lighthouse to watch over the sea for any trace of the sea monster which laid them low, and the same structure still stands today.

Though the crew initially planned to build another ship large enough to attempt to sail home, the general lack of family possessed by most of the sailors and the apparent wealth of resources surrounding Buckie led to them putting down permanent roots. Many of the men and women felt that the general living conditions of the place was much better than anything they had experienced before. The local fishing was plentiful and a sailor could be comfortable amoung a small population of like-minded individuals without the stifling regulations most towns and cities put in place.

Over the years as the settlement grew, a large hall was erected in honour of the lost crew of the Sea Splitter, serving as both a place of worship and town meeting place, the interior slowly decorated with the bones of the deceased. A dock was also constructed to better conduct fishing and later trade with other settlements, and markets were also established to further grow the economy.

Decline

As time passed, the type of people in the town changed. Many of the sailors were a superstitious lot, and those with families secretly had little desire to take their loved ones too far out into the open sea for fear of losing them to a similar fate to that of the Sea Splitter. As a result, the townsfolk became quite reclusive, rarely traveling too far from their haven. This was exacerbated by rumours of Hill Giants being sighted in the mountains surrounding the township.

About 50 years ago, the iron deposits in the area were finally exhausted up, and as most of the real income for the city was derived from the export this lead to a sharp decline in wealth. Many people have since moved away to larger, more stable places to live, and many say that Buckie is no longer a good place to raise children.

Despite the aging population, the Water Watch still exist to this day, but their numbers are few and most members are bitter old sailors who hold on to past glories and rumours of the "Captains Knot", a magical length of rope tied into a reef knot that was supposedly worn as some sort of amulet by Angus many years ago. Most historians who give credence to the rumours theorize that it was either lost or buried with the body of the old Captain when he died.
