Rested

After an hour holed up in Gustav's tomb resting (during which time the chanting does not cease), they investigated to the north and found two more crypts with stone slabs that used to seal them. There

The second is marked for Walter Durst (youngest of the family).

Both empty, not even a coffin in place.

Delg pokes around in the the larder and finds a grick (which he recognizes as a Grick which will attack with beak and tentacles and that they are an ambush predator rather than tracking prey. Speaking of which apparently our heroes are now falling into that category. Also resistant to non-magical weapons).

The special needs trash monster lashes out wth a tentacle at Delg but ends up swinging wild and while it is extracting its barbs from its own face Pavel stabs his rapier through the tentacle and into the beak. Delg slams the beak with his warhammer almost shattering it and steps aside so Sardalis can follow up with a ray of frost.

The grick slithers towards Delg and lacerates his face with one tentacle, chomping down on the dwarf with its beak. Pavel, Delg and Sardalis fail to hit the creature in response and it capitalizes with another punishing lashing tentacle strike.

Pavel plunges his rapier into the body of the creature and the lashing rear section goes suddenly limp as if paralysed. Delg shakes the hit off but fails to bring is warhammer to bear in a meaningful way. Sardalis' beam goes wide again but serves to distract the grick enough to prevent any further attack from it. Pavel penetrates the back of the head but the thing is still standing... this does not last though as it starts to turn with the motion of the withdrawing rapier Delg swings hard enough to tear the front of the creature from the main mass, spraying the alcove with organs as the top half of the collapsing body continues to writhe.

They head south and the changing seems to be growing louder, from beneath them.

Some truly unnerving bullshit happns, three horrifying figures erupting from the ground between the party.

GHOULS!!

Sardalis knows that these creatures thrive on decay and death, consuming corpses as preference. They are tireless and immune to poison.

Delg intercepts the Ghoul emerging beneath him as it is still extracting itself from the stone, tearing its cheek off. Pavel penetrates the eyeball of the Ghoul emerging below Sardalis and tearing it out. It responds with snapping jaws but misses widely #depthperception.

The Ghoul that emerged from below Delg slashes a jagged claw at the dwarf, viciously tearing at his skin. Sardalis realizes that Delg could have been paralized by this. He swings his quarterstaff at the eyeless Ghoul but misses.

Delg smashes a flash of holy water but it misses the hideous creature as it flinches back, jaws snapping just short of his beard. Sardalis clobbers the eyeless ghoul, separating its head from its body. Delg follows suit, nearly separating the head but it's still coming at him until Pavel spins and separates the final strips of flesh.

Delg moves further into the room they have just come upon, reading himself against any coming threat. Pavel and Sardalis dispatch the remaining Ghoul and let Delg know. They take note of the mouldy skeletons hanging from rusty shackles and a painted wooden statue of a gaunt pale faced man wearing voluminous black cloak. Hand rests on head of wolf standing next to him, a smoky grey crystal orb affixed to the other his other hand. Pavel feels like he almost recalls something about this person, but can't quite place it.

There is an exit to the south.

Pavel is an idiot

As Pavel places his hand on the door and discovers that it is trying to ingest the extremity. Part of the door clobbers him. Pavel jerks his hand back and runs to hide behind the creepy statue. After 10 minutes or so he checks for the door and it is gone.

He returns to report another animated object, but Delg is pretty sure this is actually a mimic as he has encountered them before.

Through the empty doorway there is a kind of parlour, with two large chairs a table, two large candalabras... Two exits lead out of the room and Delg realizes that one of these is a stone arch with a door set into it that really doesn't have any connection to the arch.

Pavel gets his Rapier stuck and yells as much.

Delg gets his warhammer stuck.

They both fail to extract their weapons.

Pavel falls back but fails to make any impact with his bow before Sardalis freezes the door which shatters.

"I have reduced the door's speed by 10 feet/round."

Sardalis and Delg both reach for the crystal orb at the same time, Sardalis pushes the dwarf away and snatches it up.

As he does three Shadows appear (incorporeal, tireless, immune to all statuses just about).

Delg and his shadowy attacker lash out at each other at the same moment, the warhammer dispersing some of its material as it reaches into his chest and deactivates a pectoral muscle (3 strength damage). Delg passes out from the necrotic damage. Pavel fails to hit the spectre looming over the fallen dwarf and draws out a flask of holy water.

Sardalis launches magic missiles at the spectre and it is dissapated completely. He yells to Pavel to grab the orb

Delg...

Makes 1 death saving throw.

Pavel smashes his Holy Water and causes the spectre to fade significantly, which is followed up by another Magic Missile from Sardalis destroying it.

The remaining shadow reaches into Pavel and petrifies his lung, significantly damaging him.

Pavel critically fails his death saving throw.

Pavel critically succeeds at his death saving throw.

Sardalis uses the Healing Kit on Pavel.

Sardalis looks at the orb and discovers it is no longer smoky. It is clear. It shows a vision of hope for a future Borovia.

Pavel wakes suddenly. He is shown the orb but sees a celebration in a town square with three figures being lauded.

They haul Delg upstairs.

LONG REST

Bedroom ahead.

30 torches in crate, foot locker flask of Alchemists Fire (given to Pavel), bullseye lantern, thieves tools, several potions of healing, small wooden coffer containing , black cloak, chain shirt, mess kit, yellow leather-bound spellbook.

Delg takes two potions

Two Ghasts (one of each sex) wearing tattered black robes burst through the walls tearing two huge holes. Immune to all sorts of things, they stink so much so that you may become poisoned by the miasma.

Delg smashes the male ghast with his warhammer.

Sardalis immediately feels sick (poisoned - disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks).

Pavel steps up to stab the male ghast and is poisoned for his efforts and he runs back into the previous room where he promptly vomits.

Sardalis' poisoning freezes him in momentarily (he loses his standard action) but regains himself in time to stagger aside and onto the bed.

Delg smashes the male and takes it out, then steps up to the female roaring defiance at the stench.

Pavel loses sight of his allies and steps forward with his hand crossbow.

Pavel becomes convinced that the ghasts used to be Gustav and Elizabeth.

Sardalis takes the spellbook which contains:

1st level: disguise self, identify, mage armor, magic missile, protection from evil and good 2nd level: darkvision, hold person, invisibility, magic weapon

Robes in cabinet, sack of candles, crate of torches.

Delg leads the way north out of the room with table and chairs. They find the trap Pavel detected before and he marks it with chalk before they head down stairs.

Chants getting clearer "He is the ancient, he is the land."

They find display cases with all sorts of stuff:

A small, mummified, yellow hand with sharp claws (a goblin’s hand) on a loop of rope A knife carved from a human bone A dagger with a rat’s skull set into the pommel An 8-inch-diameter varnished orb made from a nothic’s eye An aspergillum carved from bone A folded cloak made from stitched ghoul skin Callum P (GM): A desiccated frog lashed to a stick A bag full of bat guano A hag’s severed finger A 6-inch-tall wooden figurine of a mummy, its arms crossed over its chest An iron pendant adorned with a devil’s face The shrunken, shriveled head of a halfling A small wooden coffer containing a dire wolf’s withered tongue

The frog lashed to a stick reminds Sardalis of a wand of Polymorph.

Pavel is sent to sneak, he doesn't notice water and splashes the 2 foot depth, and suddenly the chanting cuts out.

He sees terrible things.

Unseen servant opens door.

Chanting resumes again and apparitions appear on the ledges "One must die. One must die. One must die. One must die. One must die."

Delg tells them to fuck off.

They raise their arms and... (roll initiative) out of the pile of detritus comes some kind of large plant-like creature (Delg and Sardalis recognize a Shambling Mound - engulf medium or smaller creatures. They resist cold/fire and they benefit from being hit by lightning.) and Sardalis calls out "Stay spread out, keep away from it!" as he launches magic missiles towards it and they slam into the creature sending vegetation flying.

Shambles heads up to delg at the altar and lurches at him ineffectually.

Pavel sends a panicked crossbow bolt into the mound which is surprisingly effective and causes it to thrash about.

Delg swings at the creature but loses his grip on his warhammer and it splashes into the water.

Sardalis dispatches his Unseen Servant to retrieve the hammer and casts Magic Missile again, chipping away at the Shambling Mound as it heaves itself up and slams down onto him hurting him badly.

Pavel shoots at it again causing it to roar and shudder. Delg dives away and charges towards the far platform scooping up his hammer as he goes.

Sardalis and Pavel kite the fuck out of it.
