Dumpster Diving

Sardalis finds a small brownish stone and 46 copper pieces in the "nest" of the Shambling mound.

Sardalis and Delg are up for continuing to explore, Pavel quest

Behind the secret door they find what appear to be some cells meant to contain prisoners. One is wearing a black robe reminiscent of those seen earlier. Plain gold band on the robed skeleton's middle finger.

Sardalis requests that he be allowed to take the apparent wand of polymorph and though the others have some reservations he does so without any apparent incident.

Breaking the news to the kiddies

They return to the kids and tell them that the monster was scary but it's gone now. They run off as if going to play and appear to be down in the garden playing when they look out the window. They realise the fog is gone, and is now merely overcast.

They notice that the carvings in the home have changed and no longer have the disturbing aspects.

Heading to Tser pool

They go to the Blood of the Vine tavern.

There's a single shaft of light almost like a solid pillar centered on the town square.

First impression of the inn is fairly dark and dreary with a plodding bartender mindlessly cleaning tankards. Most of the inhabitants are wearing muted colours and seem very apathetic.

There is one young blonde man with blue eyes who is wearing a dash of colour here and there, red stitching and panels on his dark leather clothes. He seems significantly more animated than the present company.

Sardalis gets the impression that unfriendly glances are directed towards Delg and himself by the muted occupants. He confidently orders three wine from the hoarsely whispering barkeep.

Pavel approaches the man with the red stitches and asks if he knows Madam Eva, and explains that they're supposed to meet travelling companions.

The man introduces himself as Ismark Kolyana and tells Pavel of his sister, Ireena Kolyana. He explains that she's been attacked by wolves and bats, that she has been abducted twice, returning later and acting strangely.

Pavel suspects this isn't the whole story.

Ismark tells Pavel Strahd is targeting his sister. She resembles the lost love of his life, Ismark suspects that Strahd thinks she is actually his lost love. He mentions that Strahd is a Vampire.

All muted are uncharacteristically grinning maliciously at them as the voices are raised and Delg explains the basics of Vampires.

Ismark wants them to take her to another settlement called Vallaki which is better defended.

Off to see Madam Eva and the Vistani - except not

They realize it's maybe not wise to just start travelling in their fatigued state. They decide to miss their appointment with Madam Eva and sneak back to the mansion.

Bildrath's Mercantile is across from the tavern.

Sardalis takes a bunch of jewellery from the mansion to get himself some materials to scribe spells into his book. He also looks to buy 4 days rations for Pavel & 4 days for himself.

He offers 25GP When Sardalis estimated approx 125GP value.

"Definitely not selling the nice stuff from the mansion to Bildrath's Mercantile."

Does not get an acceptable offer, postulates that if he dies while travelling the merchant will never get his hands on the jewellery and they both lose. Bildrath is having none of it. Sardalis buys 8 days worth of rations and leaves.

They rest up. They decide not to handle the corpse of the nursemaid for now.

The fog isn't crazy like the night before.

Morning has broken

They leave town at first light on their way to Tser pool.

They come upon the river with an arching stone bridge. 50 ft wide and 10-15 feet deep. They cross the bridge heading down the roadway between the tall trees of Svalich woods.

They come to a fork in the road with an old gallows, frayed rope dancing in the wind.

Sign shows Castle Ravenloft/Vallaki to the South West Borovia Village to East, Tser pool North West.

Small graveyard which Sardalis decides to investigate despite misgivings.

11 blank gravestones. Plots look old.

As they are leaving they hear a creaking from the gallows, where there was nothing before hangs a lifeless gray body. A breeze turns the body and its dead eyes are turned towards.

Pavel is 99% sure that is his corpse.

Pavel experiences severe distress as the others discuss the idea of throwing rocks at or poking the corpse. Pavel does not mention that the corpse appears to be his own.

The road gradually disappears and is replaced by a muddy path. As the clearing opens up there are black clouds above.

Colourful round tents around the ring of wagons, one much larger and lit from within. 8 unbridled horses drink from the river. Accordions are being played and there is singing around a bonfire.

Pavel is very aggressive with Stanomir. He is not fucking happy.

Stanomir mentions that people who go into the fog don't come back.

Pavel is less happy.

They resign themselves to talking to Madam Eva.

Madam Eva

Crystal ball, hunched figure peering into depths.

Crone with voice like dry leaves "At last you have arrived, with "

Delg the demon, forever bathed in blood but never free of guilt.

Pavel the pathetic, doomed to never again be happy.

Sardalis the Sly ,climbing the ladder while other men die.

Pavel continues to respond poorly to this.

She offers to tell them their future. Pavel responds even worse to that after the introduction she gave him.

Sardalis would be "delighted" to have a reading.

She whips out some fancy looking cards, black backed with a white seeing eye.

She lays down 5 cards in a cross.

Card telling of history makes her go woooooooo! It is the Master of Stars. Look for a wizard's tower on a lake. Let the wizard's name and servant guide you to that which you seek.

This card tells of a powerful force for good and protection, a holy symbol of great hope. Three of swords, a soldier. Go to the mountains and climb the white tower guarded by golden knights.

Next card is a card of power and strength, a weapon of vengeance, a sword of sunlight. The six of stars, the evoker. Search for a crypt of the wizard Ordina, his staff is the key.

This card sheds light on one who will help you greatly in the battle against darkness. The Seer. Look for a dusk elf living amongst the vistani. He has suffered a great loss and is haunted by dark dreams. Help him and he will help you in return.

Your enemy is a creature of darkness, whose powers are beyond mortality. This card will lead you to him. Oh dear, the dark lord. He lurks in the depths of darkness, in the one place to which he must return.

Pavel needs some air.

Sardalis asks her what she might know about the orb he has from the Durst mansion. She values it at 100GP and suggests he sell it to the merchant at Bildrath's Mercantile.

Back to Barovia Village

The corpse hanging from the gallows twists in the wind as if its gaze follows them. They are otherwise unmolested.

When they arrive they look for Ismark. Not finding him Pavel was sent into the merchant to try to get a better price than 25 GP for the 4 rings and garnet. Sardalis mentions to say that he found it on the side of the road, then he'll win.

Merchant is delighted. Starts crowing about how he has won. Tells Pavel that the previous owner of these items was a prick and an idiot and that Pavel bringing these items in from the side of the road has made his day. Gives him 100GP for the jewellery and tells a thoroughly confused Pavel that he likes him and to come on back and he'll give him a discount. He cautions him not to mention that to anyone as he's not in the habit of doing so.

(The Cloak found in the Durst mansion was a Cloak of Protection Wondrous item, uncommon (requires attunement) You gain a +1 bonus to AC and saving throws while you wear this cloak.)

They decide to sneak back to the mansion or go looking for Ismark ASAP.
