Leaving The Bridgebarians Behind

Ismark is clearly very unhappy with the situation as Lekki tries to apologise and Sardalis suggests taking a breather to lick their wounds.

Lekki asks Pavel about his magic and whether he has made an oath. Pavel is incredibly uncomfortable and reacts badly, shutting down the conversation quickly.

When Sardalis turns the question back to Lekki, they advise that their ancestors are oathbound to beings other than the infernal types that originated them. They advise that they "follow the light" and try to set out to educate Sardalis about it.

Going Up The Side

As the party progresses south, rocky ridges rise to the west at around a 60 degree angle with about 30 feet visibility.

They decide to try a little further south and the intitial slope is around the same but it appears that perhaps things level out a little around 30' up. They decide to try heading up and come back down if necessary.

After a fair amount of "this is more difficult than it looked" scrabbling by Sardalis and Ismark, Sardalis manages to get up onto the plateau and they find that they only have about 10' visibility due to the thicker fog.

Pavel asks if everyone still thinks this is a good idea but Ismark and Sardalis start to make their way upwards and as he reluctantly follows along Pavel hears a clatter of tiny rocks dislodged to N/NE & W. Saradalis has Ismark sheathe his newfound glowing sword courtesy of Lekki. They hear a few more clatters and Ismark slowly draws his sword again.

Shortly thereafter some kind of gargoyle appears next to Ismark. Pavel & Sardalis understand that these are pretty much indistinguishable from actual rock when still, and that weapons not made of adamantium are somewhat ineffective.

Pavel's Eldritch Blast misses the creature but Lekki smashes their weapon into it and it hisses angrily in response through it's closed jaws clamped on Ismark's shoulder. Another creature emerges from the mist and swipes at Sardalis but misses, hitting Pavel with teeth and claws to devastating effect.

Sardalis backs up the initial landing and calls out "draw them back to the choke" and Ismark acknowledges this, moving back while taking wild swings with his longsword. Pavel retaliates with his rapier and moves to join his comrades, followed by Lekki.

As the creatures fly over the ridge and come down at the huddled group, Sardalis casts Shatter which sends chunks of one of the creatures and shards of the other flying. Ismark & Pavel lay into the closest creature to them while Lekki attacks the other, avoiding its grapple as their summoned flaming sphere flares and the gargoyles finally shatter to pieces.

They begin to proceed up, led by the flaming sphere, and discover another statue looking very much like the others but completely stone. The mist appears to be billowing forth from its mouth and it has blue eyes.

While Sardalis attempts to ascertain the type of magic and Lekki tries to summon a bonfire on top of it which fizzles immediately. Sardalis casts Mage Hand and prods at one of the eyes, then tries pulling at it which removes the eye and the fog stops spewing forth and the other eye dims. Sardalis privately identifies this as a sapphire and pockets both of them.

They debate between pressing on and taking another breather, deciding on a breather.

Argynvostholt

High above the river valley juts a quiet promontory upon which looms a sepulchral mansion, its turrets capped with fairytale cones, its towers lined with sculpted battlements. A third of the structure has collapsed, as has part of the roof, but the rest appears intact. A dark, octagonal tower rises above the surrounding architecture.

Out of the fog comes a distant peal of thunder, quickly accompanied by the howling of wolves in the woods below, but the house stands silent, seeming like the fossilized remains of some long-dead thing smote upon the mountainside.

The party decide to start with what appears to be a graveyard but as they approach it they notice three armed figures kneeling before an altar. They decide to try to find an entrance through the breached walls to the south.

As they make their way up to the opening they see rubble is strewn throughout much of this vast chamber, caused by the partial collapse of the rooms above it. On the pink marble floor, fallen chandeliers lie amid broken chairs and other furnishings. Thick webs stretch from wall to wall, and moving among them are too many giant (10') spiders to count!

They decide better to try to head around to the north around the graveyard. As they are passing by the graveyard they notice a man standing in a 3rd floor window looking down at them. As they watch he abruptly yanks the curtains shut.

At the top of the mausoleum which is the corner of the graveyard are 4 gargoyles resembling silver dragons.

As they pass beneath the tower where they saw the man they catch sight of a large iron gate which is chained shut with an iron chain and lock. Pavel manages to pick the lock after some time and they enter a corridor, choosing to head towards the building where the man was standing. After listening at the door and opening it they reveal tattered brown drapes cover the windows of this circular room, and a heavy curtain hangs across an archway to the south. Strewn about the floor is the wreckage of half a dozen beds and other pieces of furniture.

They head south and find that the kitchen has been plundered, its tables overturned. The floor is littered with rusted utensils and smashed crockery. Narrow windows flanking a hearth look out over a cemetery. An open iron pot hangs from a hook inside the blackened fireplace. It rattles on its hook and bobs up and down, as though something is inside it.

It's a bat! It attempts to fly by them but Pavel skewers it instantly and they try the large double-doors to the south.

A twenty-foot-long table with sculpted dragons for legs stands in the center of this hall. The chairs that surround the table have backs carved to resemble folded dragon wings, and several of the chairs have been overturned or smashed to pieces. Suspended above the table is a crystal chandelier that glows with a soft white light. Standing in windowed alcoves are two life-sized statues depicting knights with dragon-winged helms and shields.

Rainwater trickles through cracks in the ceiling, flowing down the west wall and adding to a large puddle on the floor.

Five sets of wooden doors lead to this hall. The doors in the northeast corner hang open. A pair of leaded glass doors, their panes cracked and broken, stand open between panels of stained glass set into the east wall. These panels depict silver dragons in flight. Beyond the glass doors lies a dark, misty room that appears to be a chapel.

Pavel asks "So do we head in there and take a seat and wait for them to acknowledge us or....?"

Lekki agrees that "I think we wait a little at least before we head in." and Sardalis takes this moment to examine one of the statues for a moment, inspecting the draconic imagery before joining the others peering through the doors.
