Going to the Chapel

Looking at the room in general as well as the attitude of vigil and the orientation of the windows is familiar as common for worshippers of the Morning Lord. Lekki gets the impression that this is if anything a ritual of mourning or loss.

Lekki asks if they should speak to them, Pavel asks "What do you want to say to them?" and Lekki advises introduce the group. Pavel looks concerned and Sardalis decides it's time to enter the room, and the others follow immediately.

As they enter the room the closest of the three stands and whirls, hand on pommel and Pavel sees unthinking rage in its eyes. Wincing, the troubled half-elf dashes charges across the room and impales the revenant on his rapier , whipping it back out and diving behind a pillar.

First crit for Pavel, doing double damage for the first time due to his the Assasin trait for a total of 38.

Lekki groans "Damn it this is not the way I wanted this to go!" as they attack with radiant light, and Ismark closes on two of the warriors and they make punishing attacks with their longswords, with another approaching Sardalis who blasts it with a firebolt.

Pavel ducks around from his hiding spot to attack the same enemy as he runs past, sending its off-hand drops lifeless to the ground as he dashes behind another pillar, and as it glances down Ismark removes its head with a clean strike of his sword.

Another of the creatures swings a mighty fist at Lekki and the Tiefling drops to the floor senseless, and the other does the same to Ismark.

Sardalis realizes that the Revenants are unlikely to follow them out of the chapel as long as they are not the ones they are here to take revenge on. He manages to drag Lekki from the room shouting "Pavel get out if you can!"

Pavel glances at the altar, noticing a rising-sun bas relief on the altar, then dashes from pillar to pillar to hide behind one close to the door, hoping that the revenants move in such a way that he might be able to grab Ismark.

Lekki fails a Death Saving Throw.

Ismark passes a Death Saving Throw.

The revenant that took down Lekki slams the doors shut behind Sardalis and rounds the pillar to find Pavel and slash at him as the other sinks it's blade into Ismark's prone form.

Sardalis flings the doors open again and returns to Ismark's side, casting Grease on the floor beneath the revenant.

Pavel backs away from Sardalis & Ismark for a moment and then suddenly dark tendrils erupt from his body, damaging the creature beside him and then makes a guarded withdrawal to the side of his fallen companion just in time to see the revenant end Ismark's life before it falls in a heap of greasy armor.

Lekki fails a Death Saving Throw.

Pavel takes a slashing blow and Sardalis grabs the corpse and drags it out of the door as Pavel takes a slashing blow, and then the half-elf turns to follow, slamming the doors behind him as he leaves.

As they desperately work to stabilise Lekki they hear a clanking and footsteps heading away from the door.

Sardalis and Sardalis consider their options, knowing they have nothing which can help Lekki recover faster, and with daylight burning decide that their best option would be to retreat to the cots they saw in the tower room next to the kitchen.

Lekki Awakens

When Lekki comes awake Pavel tells them "You're okay Lekki, you're okay... well... you're not okay... none of us are... and Ismark is less okay than anyone... so... yeah at least you're still here."

They are patting themselves down rapidly, checking what they have on them, finding their book is still secured around their neck they start muttering "Where is my stick?". Pavel looks at him quizzically and says "Your stick? That... would be in the chapel.". Lekki responds "That's not good. I need a stick."

Pavel sarcastically responds "You're welcome.", giving Sardalis a look.

Lekki asks "Why on earth did you attack them?"

Pavel advises that the revenants were going to draw on them and so he pre-empted their attack.

Lekki argues that they would have had a chance for diplomacy and Pavel tells him to go fuck himself and after very little further discussion Pavel storms out claiming he has had enough of this and goes to sulk in the corridor.

While he is gone Lekki quizzes Sardalis on the nature of the magic Pavel has revealed and Sardalis is a bit spiky in his resposes, implying that Lekki this isn't the primary issue Lekki should be concerning themselves with and Lekki eventually drops it.

Late Night Visitation

Sardalis' alarm goes off in the middle of the night and everyone freaks the fuck out.

After much peering into the gloom and seeing nothing Sardalis moves cautiously into the room, followed by Lekki as far as the door and Pavel into the kitchen. As they come to the fireplace Sardalis and Pavel find the form of a badly wounded Dusk Elf.

He tells them his name is Savid that he was searching for Arabelle when he was attacked by Needleblights, losing his longbow as he fled. He came across this place and sought refuge but was considering leaving.

Sardalis Knows Needleblights Needleblights are strange plants which take the form of hunched humanoids, capable of flinging their needles from a distance and also will release pollen to the wind calling more Needleblights to the area.

Daybreak Doesn't End The Nightmare

Savid advises he plans to return home but tries to fill them in. He basically knows what they do, but the Vistani and Dusk Elves avoid this place believing that the ghost of Argynvost haunts it. He does mention that there was a statue that appeared to blast him with cold but it didn't harm him. He also mentions that he saw the shadow of the dragon on the wall of the large room near the entrance.

Taking It Back

They agree to try to retrieve Lekki's quarterstaff and Pavel requests that they also retrieve Ismark's family sword if possible.

They notice that the chapel doors are open again, and Pavel tries to have a look to see if it is safe. He notices Sardalis plans to Lekki's quarterstaff is within reach and nabs it. Then Sardalis completes his ritual and sends Carl the Unseen Servant to fetch Ismark's blade which it does without incident.

Secret Den

They proceed to check out the "cellar" and Sardalis finds a hidden door, which reveals a wood-paneled den which has been ransacked, its furnishings tossed about. A cold, dark hearth dominates the west wall between two narrow windows. Standing upright against the north wall is a sarcophagus made of black wood with a queen’s effigy carved into its lid.

The hearth bursts to life when they enter the room, the flame taking the shape of a dragon.

Pavel thinks the dragon is a very real (if very small) dragon. Lekki suspects that it is Living Fire.

It hisses "My knights have fallen into darkeness, save them if you can. Show them the light they have lost."

The parlor

Tattered velvet drapes cover the tall, slender windows that encircle this parlor. The furnishings are covered with dust and cobwebs, and lie in disarray. A damaged brass chandelier hangs from the ceiling, which is covered with a faded mural that depicts metallic dragons and colorful birds flying beneath white clouds.

Buried under the wreckage of a piece of furniture Sardalis finds a small wooden coffer with four potions.

  • Potion of Invulnerability*

This potion resembles liquid iron. For 1 minute after drinking this potion provides resistance (half damage) to all damage types.

The Entryway

This room feels like a king’s tomb. A grand staircase leads up to stone balconies held aloft by stone pillars and arches. A tall, faded tapestry depicting a nobleman in silver armor hangs from an iron rod above the staircase landing.

Six sets of double doors lead from this foyer. Along the walls, displayed on marble pedestals, are three alabaster busts of handsome men. A fourth bust and its pedestal have been knocked over, and their shattered remains lie strewn across the mosaic floor. Two chandeliers of wrought iron hang from the ceiling like monstrous black spiders.

Sardalis suggests that Pavel should investigate first. He sneaks in but as he gets to the stairs a huge winged shadow moves rapidly across the southern wall. Pavel freaks out and turns with wide eyes to the others, but they are unconcerned and as they start to head into the room he rushes over gesturing wildly for caution and hustles them out of the room. He's confused that the others aren't concerned about what they saw. He calms down as Lekki hypothesises that the shadow has been cast by something natural.

They go back into the room and investigate, but the shadow does not appear again.

Upstairs

Weapons and Shields cover the walls which are lined with further busts of handsome, similar-looking men.

"Why do you, the living, disturb the dead?"

"I seek to put the dead, and the un-naturally living, to rest. We know great evil occurred here and wish to prevent further."

"How very noble of you. Speak to my boss. Vladimir is the leader of the order and we await his command."

"Go away"

They hesitate.

The creature’s grip on the greatsword tightens. “If you have come to destroy me, know this: I perished defending this land from evil over four centuries ago, and because of my failure, I am forever doomed. If you destroy this body, my spirit will find a new corpse to inhabit, and I will hunt you down. You cannot free me from my damnation, nor would I wish it. “If you have come to free this land from the creature that feasts on the blood of the innocent, know this: There is no monster I hate more than Strahd von Zarovich. He slew Argynvost, broke the life of the knight I loved, and destroyed the valiant order to which I devoted my life, but Strahd has already died once. He can’t be allowed to die again. Instead, he must suffer eternally in a hell of his own creation, from which he can never escape. Whatever can be done to bring him misery and unrest, I will do, but I will destroy anyone who tries to end his torment.”

Lekki advises they have no love lost for Strahd. This seems to appease the revenant. When Lekki asks about the beacon, the revenant is suddenly joined by 6 spectral warriors and the group is instructed in the firmest of tones "Get out."

Southward Bound

This room has dark wood paneling on the walls that rises to a height of three feet. Above the paneling, the walls are painted with murals of religious figures performing holy rites. In the center of the west wall is a tattered curtain hanging in an open doorway. Three tall, slender stained-glass windows set into the opposite wall depict figures in white robes with orange sunrises behind their heads. From north to south, the three stained-glass windows portray Saint Andral, the Morninglord, and Saint Markovia.

They find a door to the west which heads upstairs

They have found the main roof of the structure! They attempt to gain entrance into the tallest tower in the place, but just as they are going to open the door Pavel notices ghostly warriors bearing longbows and aiming at them. He thinks better of opening the door, and moves away from it, taking the others with him to a place obscured from those turrets and suggests that they could move invisibly into the tower, which the others violently agree to.

They enter it without incident and find a rickety wooden landing and a staircase cling to the walls of this tower. The stairs lead up to another landing twenty feet above, and the floor of the chapel lies sixty feet below.

A 10 foot long section of the floor collapses below Pavel and he manages to cling to the edge of the hole that appears. Two spectral warriors emerge from the turrets on either side to investigate, but as all of the party remain invisible and silent they eventually return to their respective rooms.

Pavel continues up to the top of the tower and finds it empty except for an unkindness of ravens. He lowers a rope for the others to make their way up, and when they have all gathered in the top room asks what the others think should be done.

Sardalis approaches a raven and speaks to it, saying "It's us... We're here to help..." and just as Pavel is asking why he's talking to the raven all of the birds take wing, emerging from the tower to circle around the silver dragon statue on the partially destroyed rooftop section in the centre of the building.

When they approach the statue, a voice is heard...

When the dragon dreams its dream

Within its rightful tomb,

The light of Argynvost will beam

And rid this land of gloom.

Freeze-frame just before the swearing can begin.
