Docked at Madrill

  • Items from Session 15 loot tables have been sold.
  • Some of The Hunted heard an intermittent knocking or banging noise that didn't seem to mesh with the waves slapping the side of the hull and the footfalls of the crew, but couldn't seem to identify the source. Later the sides of the boat were checked and Captain Sanado was advised, he agreed that he thought he heard something and would keep an ear out.
  • During the night, Kul'theras sneaks up on Tharin where he is sleeping alongside those of the crew who are sleeping and attempts to stab him in the opposite leg to that which Magni penetrated. However he fumbles the attack and drops his blade, waking the sleeping halfling. Tharin asks him what he's doing as Kul'theras grabs his dagger and leaves the room without a word.
  • Somewhat disturbed by this, a bleary-eyed Tharin considers that this could have been an attempt on his life. He talks to the crew that are up and tells them that if anyone notices Kul'theras doing anything that might indicate an attempt to harm him, they should restrain (but not harm) the elf and he will pay any such crew member 500GP.
  • 4 hours later, Kul'theras heats a mug of water over a lantern until it is warm and quaffs a potion of invisibility, sneaking out into the hold again with intent to leave Tharin's fingers in it. He is shocked when two of the crew manage to detect him and attempt to grapple him. One named Hinack fails to correctly guess Kul'theras' position and overshoots but Vesser flails wildly and manages to catch onto the elf, gripping on with all his might and hollering to wake Tharin, who starts yelling for the rest of the crew. Soon almost everyone is crowded into the hold with the two crewman doing their best to hold Kul'theras still.
  • SHIT GOES DOWN. Kul'theras wants the crewman who's holding him charged with assault, making a fuss of the fact that he's still being held. Magni instructs the crewmember holding him to release him. At the time of giving the instruction, Magni's great sword was inhand as a guard against further shenanigans. Hand of Kali gets in Kul'theras' face telling him to "Stop this bullshit" and stalks out of the hold. Tharin leaves the ship for the rest of the evening and both Magni and Kul'theras spend most of their time until dawn on-deck.
  • Kul'theras prepares True Strike, Shield & Grease.
  • In the morning Magni and the Hand of Kali go shopping, The Hunted discover that Sever Oeaga Treandra has sent a guardsman with a message and Rittain Bonald volunteered, giving those returning to the ship a nod as they pass each other. He has been conversing with Captain Sanado in his cabin and the captain asks Magni to gather the others. Captain Sanado advises that Sever sends his best wishes and that he is very pleased to hear that they have gathered a most competent crew. However it has been impressed upon Sever that he make it clear that The ResTitution is to be looked after, and neither it or the crew are to be put in harms way unnecessarily.

Underway to Chimera Cove

  • Up in the rigging, the Hand of Kali and Landra are having a discussion. The following is a rough transcript with a missing resolution.

Landra: This has been a very strange time. How are you finding your new... independence?

HoK: Difficult. I find it... difficult to... decide between my duty and my desires.

Landra: I have been meaning to ask about that. You described your becoming the Hand as a traumatic time, yet you're a follower of Kali.

HoK: I followed the goddess since before I was formed... I see no reason not to continue doing so.

Landra: It seems strange to me that those who did this to you and yourself would be aligned the same way.

HoK: ONLY User:Sarge and User:PartyCannon KNOW

Landra expresses hope that The Hunted don't kill each other during this. HoK: Mentions a kind of survival of the fittest philosophy about the natural culling of the team, mentioning childishness. Tharin turns up and asks whether either of them are planning on doing him harm in the next two weeks or so.

HoK: That depends on your behaviour.

Tharin: How would you rate my behaviour at this point?

HoK: I haven't decided.

Landra: I have no desire to kill you or even hurt you, though I don't think you should have lied to us I'm not particularly sorry that Wyrick was freed.

Tharin: Well. I would like to apologise for my devious behaviour, waking you up and all that. I felt I owed him a life debt, but now he and I are all square. Unfortunately the view does not appear to be shared by the rest of the party, I hope it doesn't lead to physical harm.

Before leaving, Landra turns to the Hand of Kali and says "I believe I've said it before, and it may not have stuck then. But I still think you shouldn't think of these people as merely tools."

"Before we undertake this I should let you know I received a message from THOMAS informing me that one of the assailants (as before) was spotted en route to Madrill." -

Kul'theras asks Landra if all of the crates were checked when loaded onto the boat. Landra recalls that the Quartermaster supervised all of this, and suggests they check them out with her. Kul'theras advises he has been around them, with nothing untoward standing out but checking is a good idea. They check for magical auras etc, uncovering one which the Quartermaster reveals to contain Field Provision Boxes.

Arrival At Chimera Cove

On arrival they see a man standing up on a bluff, waving at the ship. They decide to go ashore to meet him.

Magni asks for any volunteers from the crew to act as guardsmen to help pull of the intneded ruse. Captain Sanado states that no-one from the crew should be required to go ashore with The Hunted to make up the numbers for "6 troops", Wyrick volunteers to dress as a guardsman despite him. At this point Landra refers to him as a criminal, and Captain Sanado takes more of an interest in Wyrick as do the rest of the crew.

Magni takes issue with Sanado interfering with the groups attempt to complete the mission.

Wyrick and Kul'theras figure a signal out for Wyrick recognising friendlies he knows (RIGHT HAND) and hostiles he knows (LEFT HAND).

The man who waved from the shore turns out to be Targas, a local who grew up in the village but has been living outside of it for some time, apparently at the fault of Poltur, something about accusing Targas of something. Targas seems to be a bit of a hayseed, but once they convince him that they aren't friends of Poltur they recruit him to stand in as their 6th guard.

Targas tells The Hunted that the village elders claim that the islands of Chimera Cove hold a dark and evil secret, and it is his opinion that Poltur must be have returned here to release it. He explains that Poltur is a decendant of the founder of Chimera Cove and has always been aloof about that. He also advises them not to engage him in a duel, as he is an excellent swordsman. Targas seems very pre-occupied with releasing the other villagers from the boathouse where they are being guarded. He surprised two of the guards who were looting the houses and killed them, and since then the guards have kept themselves sequestered away in the boathouse.

On approaching the boathouse The Hunted find several hobgoblins. Once they see the holy symbol of Iomedae and the silver wire the troops are very receptive to the idea that The Hunted are the reinforcements, and quite eager to get away from whatever is lurking in the village and killed their allies. Wyrick and Targas are left to "guard the villagers" while the remaining guards and The Hunted squeeze into a boat to make their way out into the cove to enact a ritual using the wire and holy symbol.

On lowering the symbol into the water, the entire cove suddenly goes from rough sea to gently lapping waves and the boat becomes a lot more managable. Simultaneously stone sea walls rise up between the islands while the overall water level drains rapidly, revealing the cave in the side of the island known as The Lion. Several of The Hunted note some sort of creature slithering into the receding water from a hollow in the shore to the north, and soon enough the giant octopus attacks them, tentacles wrapping around Magni, Tharin and one of the Hobgoblin troops. It is immediately blown away in one shot by Landra, limp tentacles slithering along the deck as it rapidly sinks into the water.

The Hunted steer their ship into the cave.
